Dog owners tend to freeze up when I teach them how to use proper
leash mechanics. Through proper leash mechanics, you are telling
your dog when and how to move -- forward, backward, and side to
side. Leash control is a means of communication. Most owners see
a leash as a tool to keep a dog from running away from them, but
it is much more than that.. It not only maneuvers your dog but corrects
him as well.
You don't have to be a muscle man to control your dog on a leash.
Some owners use too much arm power and get too assertive with a
leash and, unfortunately, reduce the leash to a punishment tool.
It does not take a severe correction to maneuver your dog. Other
owners are intimidated by the leash and feel clumsy to use it.
Knowing how to maneuver you dog with a leash does not involve muscle
power, but rather anticipation of how your dog will move and an
awareness of how to position your body. It doesn't matter how small
or big you are or the size of your dog. It depends on positioning
your body to be balanced in order to control your dog. It also takes
a little hand/eye coordination on your part and good timing. But
don't worry, with a little patience, you can learn how to work effectively
with your dog on a leash.
Leash handling is critical in the city environment where you have
to maneuver your dog through busy streets and other tight or crowded
situations. And your leash will always give you the upper hand if
you want your dog to do something when he disagrees with you.
