One of my favorite motivators is the whistle. A whistle always gets
your puppy's attention. All owners want their puppies to come to
them and the best way to do this is by using the whistle.
You begin to familiarize your puppy with a whistle in a number
of ways; when you enter your home; while you feed her; and when
you play with her. Whistling while doing activities she likes will
make her associate the sound with having a good time. In the future,
when you really need her to come to your whistle she will respond.
Make the melody of your whistle consistent -- decide if you are
going to blow one long toot, two short toots, etc., -- whatever
you prefer. Be consistent with your melody -- don't change it --
remember puppies thrive on consistency. I suggest having a family
meeting to decide on a whistle melody. Every member of the family
should practice with a whistle and blow the same melody.
Your puppy will soon love the sound of the whistle and will associate
the sound with you. When you whistle, your puppy will focus on you
no matter where you are or what you're doing -- she will respond
by coming to you. This creates a more dependent relationship.
