The Rookie: Housebreaking

Secrets to Successful Housebreaking:
Watch out for the puppy who suddenly sneaks off to another area of the house or starts sniffing along a baseboard-- she's probably looking for a place to urinate!
Especially in cities with high-rises and other buildings, it is not a good idea to give a puppy unlimited access to water.
The potty area outside should be a consistent designated area in order to create a pattern for your pup. If you don't have a backyard, an alley is a good potty area, since it's the least likely place to disturb your neighbors.
Be careful not to scare your puppy by being too harsh if he makes a "wee" mistake. If you scare him he may race around the house while urinating at the same time!
If you have a pup who will grow into a small dog, you may consider a puppy absorbent pad that can be placed in the washroom. The puppy pad serves the same purpose as a litter box for a cat.
You can train your puppy with her leash dragging behind. This has the advantage of being able to stop her in her tracks if she starts to wander away in the middle of a training session.
By the third or fourth month, your pup will let you know that she must go outside to relieve herself by running back and forth near the door or sitting at the door.
